Bilderband fand sich im Sommer 2015 in Mannheim zusammen, wo sich die fünf Musikstudierenden an der dortigen Hochschule kennenlernten. Geprägt durch ähnliche Einflüsse und eine konvergente Klangvision entwickelten die fünf Musiker rasch einen homogenen Bandsound.
Sie gewannen im November 2016 den ersten Preis des Future Sounds Jazzwettbewerbs, im Rahmen der Leverkusener Jazztage und waren im März 2017 Finalisten beim 9. Europäischen Burghauser Nachwuchs – Jazzpreis, sowie im Sommer 2018 Finalisten beim Getxo Jazzpreis in Spanien, 2019 im „JazzFruit International Contest Prag“ und dem „Rising Star Abend“ der Stuttgarter Jazztage.
Das Repertoire der Bilderband besteht größtenteils aus Eigenkompositionen, wobei das Spiel mit dem Antagonismus von Einfachheit und Komplexität den besonderen Reiz der Stücke ausmacht. Dabei bleibt viel Raum für Interplay und Improvisation, was für eine konstant hohe Spannung zwischen den Musikern und spürbare Energie im Raum sorgt.
Im Sommer 2019 erschien ihr Debut Album „Presenting Bilderband“ unter Unit Records.
Vor dem Start der Pandemie konnte die Band ihre erste größere International Tour in Taiwan abschließen.

In 2015, five young enthusiastic jazz musicians from Mannheim, Germany formed a Quintet and named it Bilderband. Only after 6 months of playing together, they got chosen to be part of the semi-finals of the „Future Sounds“ Jazz Competition at the Leverkusener Jazztage. Against all of their expectations, the band won this competition coming in first place and were given the opportunity to record their first album in Cologne in the great Loft Studio. In 2017 Bilderband was invited to the finals of the 9th European Jazz competition in Burghausen, Germany as well as in 2018 to the finals of the international Jazz competition in Getxo, Spain. 2019 they also were Finalists at the „JazzFruit International Jazz Contest Praque“ and the „Rising Star Night“ of the Stuttgarter Jazztage.
Each member of the band composes music for Bilderband. What connects all the different compositions is the high energy and the powerful playing of the band. Also they are very conscious of leaving lots of space in their improvisations for interaction.
The name of the band Bilderband means to them trying to play the picture within the frame and not just the frame!The picture being the essence of the music and the frame being the bar lines, the form, the time, the chords and the melody.
In summer 2019 Bilderband released their first album „Presenting Bilderband“ by Unit Records.
Right before the pandemic started the band finished their first international tour in Taiwan playing in prestigious venues like the „Blue Note Taipeh“ and had an appearance at the D’Jazz festival in Dijon 2020.
Their next album is planned to be released 2022 with exciting new works of all members.
